The squirrels that we photograph in Sweden are all wild, but in most cases they are generally friendly because people (usually not us) have spent time with them, getting them used to people. Being how food motivated squirrels are, this is always by feeding them. I know some people frown upon this behaviour and I can understand some of their reasons for this, but the way I see it, is this as no different to feeding birds and in many ways less bad than owning a pet (a topic for another time).
